Many people don't appreciate the importance of Leeds to the Industrial Revolution. From purpose-built factories to innovative engineering, Leeds was very much at the forefront of the textile industry in the UK during this crucial period.
This site in the centre of the city was the first foundry making machines for the textile industry in Leeds and probably in Yorkshire. A team from CFA Archaeology undertook the excavation in the first few weeks of 2023. Experts in the industrial history of the region were able to visit and through a combination of their knowledge of the site's history and the evidence of the physical remains, a clearer picture of the development of textile machinery manufacture is emerging.
